Captain Spotlight special edition - John Swanberg (655 games).
John is over 80 years old and still rocking it at JMS games!
Tell us about yourself:
I have been playing JMS since around 2008. Great format and good group of skaters at all levels. I started playing hockey back in Anoka as a kid. In 1954-55 I attended Shattuck/St. James in Faribault and played there. My last few years I played for Anoka and in 1958 walked on at the University of Minnesota freshman tryout. An eye injury defeated that adventure. After college I did my service obligation with the U S Marine Corps. I came back to hockey after about 20 years out of the game. I play with an AHA D-1 team, a HF team and with the Marine Corps team in the Armed Forces tournament in March.
I am a Scuba instructor and Emergency First Responder Instructor so looking forward to another trip to the South Pacific area this next year diving. My true sport is water skiing. I skied my first tournament in the Minneapolis Aquatennial in 1954 and have been a competitor ever since. A few years back I played in the over 60 National Hockey tournament in Florida for Schwan's rink and later that year water skied in the National Water Ski Championship also in Florida which was a great honor if not expensive. Most of the JMS skaters and friends know me as “Swanny“ (although I’ve been called worse).
